This delightful story was written for his daughter by DuBose Heyward, upon whose novel George Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess was based, with pictures by Marjorie Hack. Although written nearly 70 years ago, it presents a wonderful feminism message that is good for children and parents alike! Published in 1939, this classic tells the story of Cottontail, a little bunny, brown and female, who dreams of growing up to be one of the five Easter bunnies selected by the kindly Grandfather Rabbit to deliver goody baskets to children all over the world. Scoffed at by the big, white, male rabbits, who tell her to go home and munch a carrot, the country bunny puts her dream on hold when she marries and has twenty one bunny kids. (She’s a rabbit, after all!) Through the pure goodness of her heart --- plus common sense, determination, caring, and perseverence, the country bunny catches the eye of the Wise Old Grandfather bunny. Grandfather bunny asks her to be an Easter Bunny!
